That training took place nearly a year before the organization's official launch in June 2023 speaks volumes about the seriousness of purpose with which founder Mr. Nelson T. Sackie and his team approached their mission. Before the banners were raised and the speeches were delivered, the real work had already begun — quietly, deliberately, and with the children of Liberia firmly in mind.
At the heart of the three-day training was the introduction of two innovative and highly effective literacy methodologies that set Smart Readers Liberia INC.'s approach apart from conventional reading instruction.
TrainerText Visual Phonics offered teachers a fresh and engaging way to connect sounds to symbols through visual cues, making the often abstract process of phonics instruction more accessible and intuitive for young learners. By anchoring letter sounds to visual prompts, the method helps children — particularly those who struggle with traditional phonics approaches — build decoding skills more naturally and confidently.
The EasyRead System, equally innovative, provided teachers with a structured and child-friendly framework for guiding struggling readers toward fluency. Designed to reduce frustration and build momentum in early reading, the system uses carefully scaffolded texts and supportive tools that allow children to experience success at every stage of their reading journey — a critical factor in sustaining motivation and long-term literacy development.
Together, these two methodologies represented a significant upgrade to the reading instruction toolkit available to teachers at Versenia Mission School — and by extension, to the children in their classrooms.
The six (6) teachers who participated in the training left the three days not only with new knowledge, but with a renewed sense of possibility for their students. Each teacher trained is a multiplier — their enhanced skills and fresh approaches would ripple outward into every lesson, every reading session, and every child they would teach in the years ahead.
