ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS INITIATIVES

Clean Schools, Healthy Students is an environmental awareness and school health program under Pillar VIII of Smart Readers Liberia, designed to promote safe, clean, and healthy learning environments for children. The program recognizes the strong link between environmental conditions, student health, and academic performance. By fostering a culture of cleanliness and environmental responsibility in schools, the initiative helps reduce preventable illnesses, improve student attendance, and create spaces where learners can thrive both physically and academically.

The program is implemented through school-based activities that combine environmental education with practical action. Students, teachers, and school administrators are engaged in sanitation and hygiene awareness sessions, waste management education, and environmental clubs. Activities include school clean-up campaigns, proper waste disposal and recycling practices, handwashing and personal hygiene demonstrations, and tree planting or school greening initiatives. These activities are supported by age-appropriate learning materials and participatory methods that encourage students to take ownership of their school environment.

Through Clean Schools, Healthy Students, Smart Readers Liberia aims to build long-term positive habits and community involvement in environmental protection. The program strengthens students’ understanding of environmental health, encourages teamwork and leadership, and promotes collaboration between schools, parents, and local communities. Ultimately, the initiative contributes to healthier students, safer schools, and a generation of environmentally conscious citizens committed to sustainable development in Liberia.
